Fitness Trends Explained

There always seems to be a new fitness trend on the horizon — some stick around, others fade quickly. Here, we explore a variety of trends, explaining what each involves and, more importantly, whether they actually deliver results!

Anti-Gravity Yoga

Think yoga meets circus performance. Anti-Gravity Yoga involves performing yoga poses while suspended in hammocks attached to the ceiling.

Benefits:

  • Builds strength and flexibility

  • Can reduce pressure on joints and spine through supported positions

  • Adds a fun, playful element to traditional yoga

Consider:

Because it involves suspension and inversion, proper instruction and safety are essential.

Ballet Barre Workouts

Inspired by ballet training, Barre workouts blend ballet, yoga and Pilates movements, typically using a ballet barre for balance.

Benefits:

  • Improves muscle tone and posture

  • Strengthens core and stabiliser muscles

  • Great for improving flexibility and balance

Obstacle-Course Training

Obstacle racing surged in popularity thanks to events like Tough Mudder and Spartan Race.

Benefits:

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

High-Intensity Interval Training involves short bursts of intense exercise followed by brief recovery periods.

Benefits:

  • Time-efficient workouts

  • Excellent cardiovascular and metabolic benefits

  • Can improve endurance and fat loss

Consider:

Because sessions are intense, they should be balanced with recovery and lower-intensity training.

Fusion Fitness

Fusion classes combine multiple training styles into one session.

Examples include: Yogalates and Piloxing

Benefits:

  • Adds variety

  • Targets multiple aspects of fitness

  • Keeps workouts engaging

CrossFit

CrossFit exploded in popularity through the 2010s. It focuses on varied functional movements performed at high intensity.

Benefits:

  • Builds strength, power and endurance

  • Highly varied workouts

  • Strong community culture

Consider:

Proper coaching is essential as many movements are technically demanding.

Aqua Spin / Underwater Cycling

Aqua Cycling involves cycling on specially designed stationary bikes placed in a pool.

Benefits:

  • Low impact on joints

  • Ideal for rehabilitation or injury recovery

  • Water resistance increases muscle engagement

Tabata Training

Tabata Training is a form of HIIT based on a specific structure:
20 seconds of intense work followed by 10 seconds of rest for eight rounds.

Benefits:

  • Extremely time-efficient

  • Improves both aerobic and anaerobic fitness

  • Can be incorporated into many types of workouts

Hula Hooping for Fitness

Fitness-style Hula Hooping has re-emerged as a playful way to exercise.
