Sometimes, a little savoury snack is exactly what you need, even if you’re a sweet person.
Savoury snacks are also traditionally low in sugar (the nutritious ones, anyway!) so you’re less likely to have an energy crash afterwards.
However, if you are watching your calorie intake, they can quickly add up if you’re not careful.
Here are 7 savoury snacks that all contain 100 calories or less, so you’re not going to break that calorie bank!
1. Homemade cheesy paprika dip
Take 1 cup of veggies (this can be broccoli florets, capsicum, green beans, carrot or celery) and dip into 3 tablespoons of low-fat cream cheese mixed with a pinch of paprika, cracked black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground garlic (add more if you’re a garlic fiend!). Feeling fancy? Top with chopped dill and chives.
2. Ham & lettuce wrap
Take two slices of ham and wrap in a large crunchy lettuce leaf with a teaspoon of seeded or dijon mustard. Trust us, this is strangely satisfying!
3. Egg on a cracker
Roughly chop one small boiled egg and place on top of a corn thin with a tiny spread of butter. Add cracked pepper on top.
4. Bean salsa
Warm 1/3 cup black beans OR three bean mix in the microwave. Top with one tablespoon of salsa and one tablespoon low-fat Greek yoghurt.
5. Crunchy tuna salad
Mix one 95g tin of springwater tuna with two tablespoons of diced capsicum, one tablespoon of chopped red onion and one teaspoon of seeded mustard.
6. Grilled tomatoes
Chop one large plum tomato in half. Sprinkle with one teaspoon of dried breadcrumbs and one tablespoon of parmesan cheese. Place under a hot grill until brown and bubbling.
7. Rice cake with avocado
This one is surprisingly delicious given its simplicity: simply top one rice cake (or corn thin) with one tablespoon of cottage cheese, a sliver of avocado, a thick slice of tomato and freshly cracked pepper.
