5 Food Hacks That Will Blow Your Mind

Enjoying fresh produce is essential to a healthy, balanced diet. But all too often we end up throwing out those unused and spoilt veggies from the fridge, or those too-brown bananas we don’t know what to do with (hint: freeze them for smoothies!).

Here are five food hacks you won’t believe you didn’t already know.

5 fast food hacks

1. Avoid soggy celery

Celery is often banished to the crisper and left for dead. But you can make it go the distance with this all-too-easy hack: simply wrap the celery in foil and pop in the fridge. It will stay crispy for much longer!

2. Stop avocados from going brown

As much as we’d love to eat an entire avocado in one sitting (guilty as charged), we know it’s not the ideal scenario.

So what can you do to keep that cut portion of delicious, creamy avo fresh? Easy! Squeeze some lemon juice over any exposed parts. This hack goes for guacamole, too: just squeeze a good glug of lemon juice over guacamole, then when it’s time to serve, stir together. Hey presto! A zesty and just-made-it fresh guacamole.

3. Say goodbye to brown bananas

It seems like one day that bunch of bananas in the fruit bowl are just perfect – no longer green, but firm and bright yellow. Then the next day they’ve browned and have gone soft.

Here’s an easy solution: wrap the stems in plastic wrap. This stops air entering and ripening the banana.

4. Make sure your tomatoes aren’t bland

There’s not much that’s better than a fresh tomato, sliced with a little salt and pepper. Yum!

Here’s a sneaky hint: don’t put tomatoes in the fridge. Store them on the bench, away from the sun and you’ll get the juiciest, tastiest tomatoes in town.

5. Stop potatoes from ‘sprouting’

Potatoes are a great veg because, as a root vegetable, you can store them for a lot longer than some of their leafier counterparts.

But we’ve all reached for a potato only to find they’ve sprouted. What to do? Store your potatoes with an apple – yep, an apple – to keep them fresh and avoid sprouting.
